SoMo Sneak Peak: Next in Line For “The M Treatment”

The BMW X6 gets a serious performance makeover

BMW’s legacy of the M began back in 1985 when engineers placed the inline-6 from the M1 into the production line BMW 5 Series sedan, creating the very first M5. The M5 redefined the performance expectations of the sedan with its hearty helpings of power, balance, handling and precision, making the modern-day sedan handle like never before. Since then, BMW built upon this formula to expand the boundaries of performance and handling throughout the automaker’s line-up. Now, it’s the BMW X6’s turn to wear this badge of M excellence, becoming one of two of the first all-wheel drive models to offer the remarkable M performance.

With a newly-developed 4.4 liter V8 M engine under the hood delivering 555 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 500 lbs-ft torque, the BMW X6 offers the world a series of BMW firsts: it is the first all-wheel drive M and the first twin turbo M and the first SAV M model. With the addition of the Dynamic Performance Control, Adaptive Drive and the Servotronic power steering, the BMW X6 M pushes the limits of what was possible with a sports-oriented vehicle and the expected topnotch driving characteristics of the BMW brand: incredible stability, precise control and unmatched power throughout your drive. Stay tuned to South BMW for more information on this soon-to-arrive legend in the making.

New name, same classic appeal

The newly redesigned 2009 BMW Z4 sDrive35i gets a complete makeover

South Motors BMW is proud to introduce the all-new 2009 BMW Z4 – a roomier, more elegant, higher-performance redesign of their take on America’s classic “roadster”. The most noticeable upgrade on this convertible would be the impressive folding aluminum hardtop. This remarkable feat of engineering allows 2009’s Z4 to take the place of both the original convertible Z4 Roadster and the Coupe. Additionally, the 2009 BMW Z4’s cockpit is more spacious and luxurious, while its 3.5 liter twin turbo, inline 6-cylinder engine generates enough power to cover 0 to 60 in just 5.2 seconds – a time that beats even the Porsche Boxster S.

These performance changes to the Z4 most certainly pull it right out of ranks of “handsome convertibles” and place it squarely at the top of “serious sports cars”. It can conquer any challenge that the South Florida streets and traffic offer, and the retractable hard top adds unmatched utility to the model. Whether visiting the South Florida beaches or weaving your way to work through rush hour traffic, the 2009 BMW Z4 sDrive35i is a sports car that embodies the Floridian lifestyle in every way.

The 2009 BMW Z4 offers crisp handling, confident road grip and an acceleration that beats a Porsche at its own game? Where do we sign up? Check out the video of the Z4 in action, and stop in at South BMW to check one out first-hand. Produces its 1.5 millionth vehicle

South BMW is proud to announce that 15 years to the day it opened, the BMW Spartanburg manufacturing plant produced its 1.5 millionth BMW, celebrating 15 years of manufacturing excellence. The plant, which produced its first BMW in September 1994, was very proud about the accomplishment.

“Today’s events represent a significant milestone for BMW, emphasizing both BMW’s commitment to the US market and its confidence in the future,” stated Josef Kerscher, President of BMW Manufacturing. “We are very proud of the positive impact this BMW plant has delivered for this area and the quality of the vehicles that our associates produce for world markets each day.”

The future looks great, as well. Later this year, the plant will begin production of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, BMW’s first hybrid vehicle.

Matching up a diesel against a performance gas vehicle even 10 years ago would have been inviting both shameful and predictable results for the diesel burner, but the technology has come a long way. Taking a short ride in the BMW 335d will prove exactly how far diesel engine has come. Spitting black exhaust fumes are history, intrusive engine noise no longer exists and one look at the inline six, and you’ll know this isn’t a car designed primarily to deliver a high MPG – it is also smartly tuned to squeeze out every drop of performance a modern diesel engine can provide.

Road and Track’s diligent match-up of the two cars produced surprising results, with the BMW not just trumping a few categories, but soundly beating the Audi A4 in every category tested. And it did it with a substantial savings on MPG, too, with the Audi A4 returning 18.3 MPG and the BMW 335d maintaining a 25.5 MPG combined fuel economy over the course of their demanding and numerous road tests.

Nay-sayers of diesel technology might counter the BMW’s MPG savings by pointing out that diesel gas is more expensive than the premium fuel required for the Audi, which as it turns out, is another surprise. A quick check on www.gasbuddy.com shows diesel fuel is currently 8 cents per gallon CHEAPER than premium unleaded in my area of Miami-Dade.

To sum it all up, it appears the BMW 335d has every advantage over the Audi A4, in terms of 0-60, 0-100, braking distance, slalom speed and gas mileage.

What do you think – Is diesel in the future of performance vehicles, or is the 335d just a remarkable flash-in-the-pan? Post your comments or participate in our poll…
